Hiranyaksha, the younger brother of Hirankashyapu, worshipped Lord Shiva with a severe penance to obtain a son. Lord Shiva gave him his deformed son, Andhak who was born from Shiva's perspiration. Andhak was blind since his birth. After the death of Hiranyaksha, Andhak became the king of the underworld. The sons of Hirankashyapu were envious and tried to kill him but were unsuccessful. They claimed that he was incompetent to rule and mocked his ugliness. Andhak was hurt and he went into exile. He appeased Lord Brahma who blessed him with divine sight, beauty and invincibility against the Gods. An arrogant Andhak, won his kingdom back and defeated Indra and Lord Vishnu. He tried to misbehave with Goddess Parvati. Shiva was furious and lifted him in air with his Trident. Lord Brahma appeared and revealed Andhak’s true identity. Andhak was overwhelmed with remorse and begged for forgiveness. Shiva forgave him and recruited him as one of his Ganas.
